LoRaWAN water meters: remote reading under your brand
One gateway covers a whole building or development. You run the network; Datakubo provides the branded portal.
LoRaWAN is the long-range, low-power radio most remote-read water meters use in residential buildings. The meter sends its reading to a gateway, the gateway to a network server (LNS), and the LNS to Datakubo, which turns it into consumption, alarms and a portal for every resident.

How the readings arrive
- The Things Network or ChirpStack: the gateway forwards to the network server, which decodes the uplink and sends it to Datakubo by webhook. If you already run ChirpStack or TTN, you stay in charge.
- All-in-one gateway: Dragino, Milesight, Kerlink or RAK gateways with an embedded network server post straight from their webhook (how it connects).
- No network of your own: a LoRaWAN network managed by our partner, quoted per site.

Datakubo LNS (coming soon): you will be able to point the gateway straight at Datakubo, with no TTN or ChirpStack. Until then, any of the routes above.

Six steps, the same ones you will see in the dashboard.
Create your account
At app.datakubo.com/signup, with a 30-day trial and no card. The setup wizard walks you through the next steps.
Copy your API key
In the dashboard, Settings → API Key. It is the
X-API-Keyheader that identifies your organisation. It is shown once: keep it safe.Register the meters on your network server
In The Things Network or ChirpStack, add each meter with its DevEUI and AppKey (they come in the manufacturer’s delivery file) and paste the model’s decoder into its profile.
Point the webhook at Datakubo
URL
https://api.datakubo.com/api/v1/ingest/water-consumption, method POST and theX-API-Keyheader. On TTN it is a custom webhook; on ChirpStack, an HTTP integration; on an all-in-one gateway, its HTTP forwarding. Fields and examples in the webhook format.Check the meters in Devices
Each meter appears on its own with its first uplink, with no registration form. Compare the reading with the meter’s display and give it a name people recognise (flat 3B, riser C).
Assign and invite
Create the community in Customers, assign each meter to its home in Devices, add your logo and colours in Settings and invite the management and every resident.
Before you connect: check your webhook
If a meter shows up with no readings, it is almost always a decoder field name. Paste a sample webhook into the payload checker and it tells you which field is missing and what it should be called.
Rather do it together? Book 30 minutes and we connect your first installation with you.Full guide
No decoder for your model? We write it for free within 24 hours. Live in 30 minutes once the gateway is up, or your first 3 months are free.
When to choose LoRaWAN
- Many meters close together: a building, a development, an irrigation community.
- You want to run your own network and not pay for a SIM per meter.
- There is coverage, or you can fit a gateway with power and internet.
If the meters are scattered and a gateway would only reach one or two, look at NB-IoT. Full comparison in the LoRaWAN vs NB-IoT guide.
LoRaWAN water meters FAQ
Do I need ChirpStack or TTN to use Datakubo?
You need a LoRaWAN network server: The Things Network, ChirpStack or an all-in-one gateway with one built in. Datakubo’s own LNS is coming soon.
Which LoRaWAN gateways work?
Any gateway that works with TTN or ChirpStack, and all-in-one gateways with an embedded network server such as the Dragino LPS8N, Milesight UG65/UG67, Kerlink Wanesy Edge or RAK7268/7240, if their webhook sends ChirpStack v4 or TTN v3 format.
Which alarms come from a LoRaWAN meter?
The meter’s own (leak, overflow, reverse flow, low battery), when the decoder delivers them in the uplink, plus Datakubo’s: abnormal consumption against each meter’s history and meters that stop reporting.
How much does it cost?
From €49/mo with 20 meters included. Gateway, installation and the network server (TTN has a free plan) are extra.
